Did you know that you can donate books to your local library?
Definitely check first, but most libraries accept books that are in good condition. They may add them to the library or sell them in “friends of the library” groups to fund programs.
You can also donate books to your local neighborhood Little Free Libraries. Many of them can be found on this map.
Depending on the books, other places that may want them are schools, jails, nursing homes, hospitals and your city may have a book exchange where you can get store credit. And there is always the option of charities and thrift shops.
For anyone who uses Facebook, there are often “gifting groups” in your area where you can post items. I will do this too if I have time, especially for special interest books. It’s a great way to get items directly to people who could really use them.
Library of Things
As an item of interest since I was talking about libraries, did you know libraries offer a lot more than books now?
I am not sure all cities are on board yet, but our local libraries offer everything from games to sewing machines to 3-D printers to telescopes to cooking supplies to instruments and even surfboards! They want to make everything accessible to everyone! So check out your local library and see what they have to offer.
Here’s the Virginia Beach Library of Things Catalog.
